Fish & Chips - A History
There is nothing more British than fish & chips, eaten with salt and vinegar, fish & chips are one our great British institutions. Where ever the British were fish & chips follow.
Humble Beginnings
But where did this famous culinary delight originate?
The simple answer is that no one really knows. We do know that fish & chips developed separately - the French invented chips or "chipped pommes de terre a la mode" ( from the humble potato commonly believed to have been brought to Europe by Sir Walter Raleigh in the 17th century and in 1836 Charles Dickens referred to fried fish warehouse" in Oliver Twist. The great British fish & chips trade grew out of these existing small businesses which sold fish and chips separately in the streets and alleys of London and some of Britain's industrial towns in the 1850's
Both Lancashire and London stake a clam to the origin of our most famous meal , chips were the staple of the industrial north whilst fried fish was introduced in London's East End.
Marriage of Taste
The public soon realized that fish and potatoes were rather tasty combination and over the course of the next 100 years, fish and chips became not only a national institution, but a vital source of nutrition for families - helping to fuel the workforce of the industrial revolution.
Long Live the Fish & Chip Shop
Along with the history of fish & chips comes the colourful history of the fish & chip shop. The first fish & chips shop in the North of England is thought to have opened in Mossely, near Oldham, Lancs, around 1863. Mr. Lees sold fish & chips from a wooden hut in the market and later he transferred the business to a permanent shop across the road which had the following inscription in the window, "this is the first fish & chip shop in the world". But in London, Joseph Malin opened a fish & chip shop in Cleveland Street within the sound of Bow Bells in 1860. There are now around 8,500 fish & chip shops across the U.K. - that's twelve for every one McDonald's outlet.
Fish & chips became so essential to the diet of the ordinary man and woman that one shop in Bedford had to employ a doorman to control the queue at busy times during 1931.

During the 2nd World War, Lord Woolton, Minster of food, declared the Fish & Chips were the only takeaway food that was not to be rationed.

Health Benefits of Eating Fish
Fish are nutritious and good to eat. When properly prepared, fish provide numerous health benefits, especially for the heart. The American Heart Association recommends eating two to three fish meals each week. The benefits of eating fish include:
Fish offer high-quality protein with fewer calories than a similar-sized portion of meat. For example, both catfish and ground beef are about 18% protein. But, for an 8-ounce meal, the catfish will have only about 232 calories, while the regular ground beef will have about 640 calories.
Fish are low in sodium and are good sources of potassium, vitamins, and other minerals.
Fish are generally low in cholesterol and saturated fats, which have been associated with high blood pressure and heart disease.
While the benefits of fish on nutrition are still being studied, much of the current research is focused on various kinds of beneficial fats in fish, particularly a kind called omega-3 fatty acids which are in some fish and fish oils. Some studies have indicated that these fatty acids have favorable effects on health conditions such as hardening of the arteries, high levels of cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Health Benefits of Eating Seafood
Fish diets have been associated with a reduced cardiovascular risk, as well as better vision and cognitive development in foetuses.
Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, lead author of the Harvard study and cardiologist at the university's schools of public health and medicine, and colleagues concluded eating one or two servings a week of fish rich with omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk of dying from a heart attack by 36 percent; it cuts the rate of death overall by 17 percent.
Since heart attacks are the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, the role of fish consumption could be a "huge health benefit," he said.
Seafood is a good source of protein, vitamins such as selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA. Fish consumption has increased in recent decades, prompting a shift from catching seafood in the oceans to raising the animals in aquaculture. Among the most commonly consumed seafood species in the United States are shrimp, canned tuna, salmon, pollock and catfish, according to 2004 data from the National Marine Fisheries Service.
Taking supplements of fish oil seem to produce the same effects as eating fish, Mozaffarian said, although the consumer would miss out on the protein and vitamins.
